New Idiot to Laugh at…(Alan Collinge)

Posted by americandust on May 10, 2007

So due to a recent discussion on something political, I was informed about a Political Action Comittee (you know, the evil special interest we’re always hearing about) called “student loan justice.”  So I researched it’s founder, Alan Collinge.  I read his story online somewhere and basically, well, Mr. Collinge, you’re an idiot.

Collinge borrowed $38,000 for school at USC (the first warning sign is that he went to USC).  Anyway, he gets out of college and immediately falls for the old “consolidate your debt” thinking this will improve his student loan debt situation.  Hello… paying back smaller amounts over longer times will only cost you more in the long run (slight exception where the loan’s interest rate is drastically smaller– IF they don’t charge an arm and a leg for the consolidation).  So he’s already cost himself significantly more in interest payments.  Next, the genius goes on to say he didn’t understand Sallie Mae was in this business to make money!  I guess he thought it was ran by the government to help people… so basically it’s his fault again for not knowing something a quick google or turning on his radio to any of the financial programs would have solved.  But his story continues…  He misses a payment one month and doesn’t really worry about what kind of punishment he would have (didn’t he read the contract he signed?  Nope… I’m sure he didnt’).  Then it takes 6 months (six!) of bills before he notices he’s being charge a late fee for that month!  Six times a bill comes in higher then usual and he doesn’t notice (okay, we can add truthfullness to the list of things Mr. Collings isn’t so good with).  Then he tells us he left his then current job to find a higher paying job.  He left his job just assuming he’d get hired somewhere else and make more money?  Once again, I’m not sure we’re getting the truth… maybe he was fired.  I hope he was fired, because if you’re dumb enough to leave you job just thinking you’ll find a better paying one without having a new job lined up, well, I hope you’re not doing any work that involves reasoning.  He then bounces around from state to state… once again you have to wonder how his finances took that.  He claims he applied for a deferment and didn’t get it (most people do not so he had to know that was a longshot).  So of course all this time the back-interest, fees, and any other missed payments are adding up…. quick.  All according to the contract he never bother reading.  Then he can’t understand why the company won’t release him from the extra debt he negligently took on while trying to weasle out of his commitment.  Better yet, he then tries to enter the world of defence contracter businesses, but isn’t aware that he’ll get nowhere (just like military clearance, if you’re in huge debt you are considered a threat to be easily bribed and thus a risk they will not take).   Then of course he tries to turn to the classic escape plan of those foolish or evil with their money… bankruptcy.  The plan B (actually, who are we kidding, plan A) of deadbeats.  “Why can’t I get what I want and screw everyone else out of what they’re entitled to?”  This is where it gets good… he apparently didn’t know that you can’t lose student loan debt through Bankruptcy!!!  Then he blames that fact on Sallie Mae’s lobbying efforts.  It’s been like that for a long time, if you didn’t know.  It’s that way for a reason, if they let you default and get away with sticking it to the loaner, then everyone would do that and there would be no student loans at all.  Then of course, rather than face up to his own horrible and dishonest (yes, it is dishonest to try to weasle out of a contract or escape fullfillment of your financial duties) efforts, he blames the system, starts a PAC and tries to blame it all on the high salaries of the exectutives that run the program he tried to screw.  Seriously… you’re an idiot. Or worse, you’re a con-man.  The difference between you and a theif who breaks in at night to steal is that the theif doesn’t try to get others to feel sorry for him.

  1. First of all, who the fuck are you?

Second of all, your knee jerk bullshit doesn’t fly. If what happened to me (and what is happening to millions of americans) happened to you, you’d be flying your freak flag like a fucking hippy.

Finally, Here is My story (see below) as I posted it before you took the liberty of spinning it beyond all comprehension.

Feel free to email me directly at justice@studentloanjustice.org if you would like to continue this conversation. I see you have conveniently hid all of your contact info. Whats the matter? Are you scared to stand behind your words? YOu fucking pussy.

    Alan

I originally borrowed about $38,000 for both undergraduate, and graduate school, and earned 3 degrees in aerospace Engineering, plus 2 minors in Industrial Systems Engineering, and Philosophy from USC. After graduation, I consolidated with Sallie Mae. I got a fairly low paying job as associate Scientist at Caltech, and faithfully began repaying my loans. As an aside: I was slightly short one month. I called Sallie Mae, and was told over the phone that as long as I continued to pay in a timely matter, that the underpayment wouldn’t affect me. It was over 6 months later when I realized that Sallie Mae had charged me large penalties EVERY month after that for the original underpayment. I talked to them again, and they refused to take off the fees. I realized at that point that Sallie Mae was not part of the government, but rather a for-profit corporation.

My wage at Caltech wasn’t huge, and I found that after about a year or so, It was getting harder and harder to maintain the payment schedule, despite my taking a night job as a cook. In Summer, 2001, I left my job at Caltech with the belief that I would find a higher paying job. Unfortunately, the events of September 11th put an immediate chill on the economy, particularly aerospace . I proceeded to liquidate all of my assets, which included a small retirement package, and a vehicle. I left the state, and began searching for work. There was none. I applied for a hardship deferment with Sallie Mae on December 12th, 2001. They denied it, and instead place my account into default on December 13th. It would be about 2 years before I again found any type of full time employment. During this time, I worked as a cook on a remote island in Alaska (7 days per week, 92 hours per week, at a wage of about $5 per hour), did odd jobs, and cooked in 4 different restaurants in Tacoma, WA.

In April, 2003, I received a bill for nearly $80,000 from General Revenue Corporation (which is owned by Sallie Mae) on behalf of the guarantor, Edfund. I thought there must be a mistake, given that I had originally borrowed $38,000, and paid off approximately $4,000 of this. It turns out there was no-mistake- the federal law gave these people the right to add huge penalties and fees to my loan. Moreover, Sallie Mae – who had already profited at least $25,000 on my $38,000 loans (this doesn’t include interest subsidies paid to them by the federal government while I was in school), was demanding more than double what I originally borrowed to be paid in full! Sallie Mae would have profited an additional $20,000 on my $38,000 in loans had I been able to find a way to comply with their demand.

I called Edfund and repeatedly offered to begin repayment on the original debt (what I borrowed, plus interest). I even offered to repay at a higher interest rate! They refused. I couldn’t understand why a “non-profit, public benefit” corporation needed to charge so much more than the original debt.

Then, I got curious, and researched the executive salaries of Edfund. They were exploding! I dug a little deeper, and saw that there were dozens of “Edfunds” out there, all paying themselves massive increases in salaries. Then it began to make sense. I was blown away when I saw the stock bonuses that Sallie Mae executives had given themselves.

Anyhow, the loan has since been transferred to the Department of Education, who now claim that I owe about $109,000, which may as well be a million. My life has been paralyzed. My pitiful tax returns have been taken, The job I could find, helping disadvantaged businesses at a local non-profit, utilizes none of my engineering skills, pays a fraction of what I though I would be making, and is about to be garnished by yet another collection agency holding my account. I recently got another job as a tech writer at a defense company, but with my defaulted loans, my initial security clearance application was denied. I received notice two weeks ago that I am being laid off.

There is no reason for the collection agencies to accept a fair amount (i.e. what was borrowed, plus interest), and so they don’t. I have thought seriously about bankruptcy, and believe me- this is the last thing I would ever want to do- but even this option is not longer available to student borrowers thanks to the lobbying efforts of Sallie Mae.

Its really funny how people who are well connected can find ways to extract more and more money from the public without actually creating anything useful for society. I’ll never understand how anyone could live with themselves for doing that. This system is rigged, and a whole bunch of already rich people are intent on getting a LOT richer from my misfortune.

      Mr. Collinge
Dont waste your time here. These asses are defending the same industries that our tax dollars are still bailing out for “poor decision after poor decisions” they have made, the same industries who ran to the government for “help” after needing to be bailed out for irresponsible and reprehensible behavior. The Sallie Mae and Freddie Mac still have their hand out recieving the same tax dollars that we are not allowed to spend on our own debts. But if you are not a rich greedy CEO that has participated in the near collapse of our economy you have idiots like these, who must have some agenda in defending corporate america, and who resort to outright insults and verbal intimidation in order to shut you up. There are literally hundreds of thousands of americans who are in your shoes. An education is necessary in order to find a jobs that pay enough to survive on. Student Loans should facilitate a society of educated people who bring innovation and intelligence to our future rather than penalizing people for daring to specialize in fields that contribute to society. But instead, if you max out your credit cards and spend on frivolous garbage, you can file for bankruptcy but if you make the sacrifice of going to school to become an engineer or a teacher then you continue to suffer under that loan regardless of how your situation changes. Regardless of the devastating economy caused by the actions of the Freddie Mac. As wages continue to be cut by rich companies who enjoy unprecedented amounts of profits….. GOD FORBID THAT THE WORKING CLASS FALLS ON HARD TIMES…GOD FORBID THAT THE VERY PEOPLE WHO ARE GIVING THESE PIGS THEIR CORPORATE WELFARE SPEAK UP AND NEED RELIEF FROM FINANCIAL BURDENS THAT HAVE ONLY BEEN MADE WORSE BY FREDDIE MAC.
If you guys are looking for someone to insult why dont you begin with sallie mae and goldman sacs and freddie mac. I am absolutely sure that you will continue your campaign of insults but I am sure that Mr. Collinge will continue with his crusade and that thousands of people are behind him!!!

I don’t understand why you aren’t on board with the initiative then “americandust”. The entire system needs to be changed radically so that we are paying the newer generation to be more educated and higher earning instead of paying the multitudes of lower (or non) income people to stay home and collect welfare and other “generosities” while they contribute nothing to society as a whole— but bleed from it! you have been a victim of this and should be a main supporter for lower education and interest costs not to be hardened by it because “you have paid”. help the future and tell your story in the manner it should be.

ALAN, you owe no explanation to this putz. Apparently he is UNEDUCATED about how this and many other practices work here in this great country that works to extract as much $$$$ from its citizens. The rich will always fuck us because they can and we have very little recourse to fight. Congress is at the wheel and can pass laws to protect big business and screw us. I say that students caught in this SCAM, should go directly to their congressman and threaten with advocating to get rid of them.

    Go Alan go!

  3. Seriously, doesn’t Alan just sound like the biggest idiot in the world? Bad choice after bad choice then he wants the government to do something about his choices. You can just tell his little Communist-loving soul wants the government to run his life because he obviously can’t do a decent job of it.

    • Article IV Section 2. of the United States Constitution:

“The citizens of each state shall be entitled to all privileges and immunities of citizens in the several states.”

When you seek to promote the denial of your fellow American to the privileges of our laws (bankruptcy for one) or support discriminatory employment practices, you cease to be an American patriot. “Americandust” you have no right to use any part of my nation’s name in your alias. What intellectual achievements have you obtained I wonder? What achievements have you obtained period? Those accusing others as being a “loser” so often are standing in glass houses projecting their own worth onto others.

Ha ha ha…..i love it americandust…you are right on with this one and I applaud you for standing up to this loser. He is the ultimate american failure and shows it over and over again. Use your 3 engineering degrees for something worthwhile Alan.
How can Denise possibly cheer on a man like Alan. I mean what a pathetic man he is, i’d like to know if he makes his entire living off of bashing the student loan industry? I’d also like to hear from the thousands of people in this world who live a wonderful life because of the opportunities they had after taking out loans and getting degrees. The only reason we don’t hear much from them is because they have jobs. A problem Alan Collinge obviously doesn’t have to worry about after quitting CalTech in an attempt to secure an overpaid government job where he could suck off the D.C. tit for a bit. Shove your stupid website up your ass Alan, maybe Denise and Holli can help you lube up.

I love this post. Expose this loser for the cry-baby he is. Glad to finally see someone going after him like he does to everyone else. I mean wtf? Get a job Alan. You have 3 fucking degree’s!!!!!!

  6. Joe Banker said

If Alan had put half the effort into paying his student loans as he does whining about Sallie Mae and the injustice of not being able to file bankruptcy on his debt, then he would have had them paid off by now (without having defaulted). I’m glad to learn more about Alan Collinge, and glad he told more of his story here. Now I know I can just totally discount anything he has to say; he’s completely discredited himself. I didn’t realize that he was just a whiney deadbeat defaulter until recently.

Still, something fishy about his story… a guy with three engineering degrees – practically a rocket scientist – takes a $5 an hour job as a short order cook on a remote island in Alaska? Who were you running from at the time? And why didn’t you call Sallie Mae while you were gone to let them know where to send in your statements? You know, they had online bill payment and online loan servicing options back in 2001 even. Or was internet or phone service not even available on your remote island hideaway?

Alan, how much did it cost you to drive that RV around the country on your Whine Tour earlier this year? Who paid for that? Was that out of the donations to your PAC? So, you lived off the donations of other defaulted whiners who contributed to your whiney blog? I’m really curious how you funded the gas and your living expenses for those 5 or so months.

Alan, I think your best bet is to try and get a physician to certify you as totally and permanently disabled. Surely you have some kind of permanent mental illness… caused by Sallie Mae, I’m sure. Or, you could have the debt discharged in bankruptcy if you can demonstrate “Undue Hardship.” If you whine enough to the bankruptcy judge, I’m sure s/he’ll want to discharge the debt just to get you to shut up. Heck, I’d contribute $10 to stop your whining, your mis-information, your distortions of facts (that is, when you actually come up with any facts in your retorts).

Well, it’s been interesting, Alan. Thanks for all the laughs!

  7. I always thought that the phrase “nobody is perfect” was true, but I guess it’s not.

The student loan industry has a high level of deceipt and corruption. Sallie Mae, particularly, does whatever they can to insure that borrowers will fail at repaying their loans. They have played countless games with me. One of these games was applying my payments to the wrong loans, and then blaming the government for taking the money. I have government and private loans through Sallie Mae. None of my payments were being applied to the private loans, and Sallie Mae’s Collections Department was calling my house over ten times per day trying to collect the money. I had to fight for a few months to get it fixed, and then they didn’t even completely fix it! I’d still be fighting if I wasn’t put in touch with TWO helpful people at the company. They went as far as telling me that this is all too common a situation with their company. The one lady had to fight for 2 or 3 weeks herself to get it straightened out!!! Although they admitted it was Sallie Mae’s fault, the late fees, compounded interest, and reports on my credit record weren’t rescinded. I was told that I needed to contact another department for that, and that department told me that it was my fault because I didn’t make the payments on the private loans.

Alan has done the most to educate people on the corruption in the student loan industry and I commend him for it. His reports are nothing BUT facts.

  8. Responsibility said

It seems as though Alan and most people’s beef is with Sallie Mae so perhaps instead of attacking the entire industry, all of you should concentrate on Sallie Mae. Alan is well known for his complete inability to see the good that exists within the industry. He wants to destroy the entire program which will do nothing but make it impossible for thousands of intelligent people to attend college and improve their lives. That is why everyone hates Alan Collinge. His complete lack of sound decision making, as proven above by his story is HIS problem, not the industries and not the countless many who have student loans to thank for the good fortune they have had in their lives. That includes me. I would be nowhere had I not been able to take out loans. So while we all sympathize with stories like your Mr. Zeman, please understand that Mr. Collinge is not worthy of the praise he gets, and in the end, he may turn out to be much worse than the industry he is trying to get rid of.

  9. You may be right about concentrating on Sallie Mae. I am sure there are many good lenders out there, and my experience has only been with Sallie Mae. It is unfortunate that Sallie Mae has been taken over by corporate greed. There are good people within the organization, but their hands are tied by a system designed to make borrowers fail.

I don’t believe for one second, however, than Alan is trying to get rid of the industry. I believe is fighting for reform, something that is desperately needed.

  10. Responsibility said

Wow, it feels good to find some common ground. I agree with everything you say, except for the Alan part but we can agree to disagree on that. Reform is desperately needed as is a universal push to educate high school and college age kids about taking on debt. When I was that age, you either had cash or you didn’t. With everything electronic these days, it is much more difficult to realize the value of a dollar. I would love to see SLJ dedicate some of its time and effort to education.
College is still a great idea for many and federally subsidized student loans are the best deal going. I am absolutely fine with putting some legislation into place to keep companies like Sallie Mae from ruining peoples lives through aggressive collection tactics. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. If there were no loans available, this country would have a big problem on its hands.

  11. Richard Nixon said

You seriously believed them *if* they even truly said that not paying a full months payment would be fine if you continued paying? Seriously…..how did you get three degrees while being that stupid? I’m not buying that logic……why not pay that small difference at the time and avoid the problem. It’s called COMMON SENSE

  12. Rachel said

I don’t know if I’d call Alan an idiot. Maybe I’d just call him a victim of a growing epidemic in America–having to take out huge loans to pay for an education that may or may not help you get a decent job after college. College is a must for almost any job now, but employers are getting more tight-fisted with wages and benefits. Paying off any kind of student loan along with trying to live comfortably in any other aspect of life is increasingly difficult for anybody, especially those from the middle class. It’s just sad that the cost for higher education, which is required for many jobs, is steadily increasing, while being able to find a good job (or a job at all) to pay that cost off is steadily decreasing.

And never do business with Sallie Mae. I have several different student loans but they were the worst to deal with.

  13. BeerEye said

I also had the misfortune of having to deal with Sallie Mae after consolidating my student loans, however I was able to eventually have the loans taken over by another (less sinister) lender and was able to pay them off through hard work and some sacrifice. I agree with the majority of posters here – a college degree is necessary in today’s marketplace; I took out loans that I</strong)was responsible for and knew had to be repaid by whatever means; and finally, Alan Collinge is a petulant, whining, self-serving, seriously deranged schmuck who requires either counseling of some sort or good swift kick in the ass to get him moving in the direction that three different engineering degrees should be taking him in this life.

  14. C said

You have three degrees, which you are so proud to point out, yet you can’t understand how a loan payment sytem works? Wow, doesn’t say much for your school does it? Or for you for that matter! The best job you could get was at $5 an hour? What, did you not want to “lower” your standards? It’s simple, you signed the contracts, so abide by them or file bankruptcy.

  15. Patrick said

So ‘hid’ is, in fact, a word. However, the word does not apply in the terms you suggest. The proper word is ‘hidden’, whereas hid is the improper word. Hid is wrong, go get another degree in English Comp you fucking pol.

  16. Jen said

I have a Sallie Mae loan too, and it will be forgiven in the event of my death. Perhaps his will be too…perhaps this weenie should try suicide.

  17. “You seriously believed them *if* they even truly said that not paying a full months payment would be fine if you continued paying?”
They told me the same thing. It was right about the same time I told them I was going to quit paying the loans until they started applying them to the correct loans. They told me I had to pay and I asked,”Why? You guys are charging me late fees anyways on loans I’ve been paying on. You guys just throw all the money into the wrong loans!”

“you can’t understand how a loan payment sytem works?”
The standard loan payment system is easy to understand. Sallie Mae likes to change rules mid-stream to benefit themselves. That’s why you don’t go for any changes, such as consolidation, because that’s when they “neglect” to tell you certain things and then go for the kill.

“so abide by them or file bankruptcy”
Bankruptcy doesn’t get you out of student loans. Sallie Mae saw to that as part of their move to go completely private.

For those of you criticizing Alan- it’s obvious that you either had someone else foot your education bills or you had the benefit of living at home or getting SOME form of help (family/ spouse, trustfund, etc)!!!

There are millions of people out there who have become prey to lenders such as Sallie Mae or the Pennsylvania Education Services Agency, etc. There is nothing to regulate their lending practices except the government that pads their bank accounts through legislation to protect them in the first place. If you go to Alan’s website, he has done his homework. He has documented each of the politicians who have received political funding from Sallie Mae. Anyone who can’t see a pattern with this doesn’t want to see the truth.

It’s interesting that the first poster “AmericanDust” has never bothered to reply to Alans’ posting. Alan also makes a good point, if he believes in what he types- then why hide behind a screen name?

For any of you silver spooned brats who grew up protected by mom and dad- you will never understand people who have been put in this sitaution. Period. End of Story!

  20. Actually I make it a rule not to give my contact information out to people who cuss me out for disagreeing with them. Furthermore, I don’t want Alan’s cronies emailing my personal email with Spam. However, if Alan would like to leave me his personal email I’d be glad to discuss it with him further.
As for me, I went to a cheaper, local college to save money. I’ve been working full time and taking a couple classes a semester to get my Master’s so I didn’t have to borrow money. As for undergrad, I’ve now paid back the money I borrowed (mostly personal loans, not all student-loans) and as soon as I got a job I stayed at home one year to save up money to pay back my debts. I’ve never driven a car that cost over $14,000 and I don’t spend more then I can afford on anything. It’s called adult-hood. I just happened to enter it before Alan. I hope he’ll do the same one day instead of moaning about his bad breaks.
To quote a French Author (Flaubert) I read in my liberal arts undergrad education…

“Plenty of Great Men Have Had Harder Beginings Then You.”

Typical. Since “Americandust” doesn’t personally have a problem with the student loan industry, anyone who DOES is a “whiner” or a “loser” (kudos by the way to raising the level of the argument to fourth grade name-calling. Always the mark of someone who has a REAL point). Alan has put his name on the line and published his personal experience and (amazing!) HUNDREDS of others have echoed published nearly identical problems. THOUSANDS have joined his cause.

Yet “Americandust” has started an ANONYMOUS blog (again… typical: when you want to lie, twist facts or sling poop like an ape, it’s always best to be anonymous… as opposed to starting an organization under your own name like….hmmm… oh yeah! ALAN!) that is as obvious in it’s pandering to the status quo as it is in it’s name-calling hyperbole.

I can see why you chose the name Americandust. Guys like you would love to see this country burnt to the ground if it made you a buck off selling the heat it created (BTW: Good job at attacking anyone who went to USC. THAT’S a valid argument, huh? You hate Californians and New Yorkers, I bet. Ronald Reagan was from California. Hmmmm… last I checked, they were AMERICANS. That means… yup… YOU HATE AMERICA!!!! Good job!!!). Why not move to a country where no one can criticize things you don’t like? Iraq is available.

Here’s my dare: let’s see three posts in a row without name calling or read-between-the-lines innuendo about SLJ. THREE posts that actually show Alan or his organization have ACTUALLY condoned violence (not through YOUR innuendo or twists of words, but by THEM actually saying a violent post was a good idea) or that they never tried to pay the loans. THREE. In a row.

You can’t. You have no argument.

(I now return you to the people who want to recreate the truth. Feel free to laugh at them.)

Uh, I don’t know what’s going on here exactly, but it sounds like Alan missed quite a few payments on a loan.

I did that once, also on a student loan, and ended up in a bit of a disaster, with a bad credit rating, requiring alot of work to try to sort it out. I spent alot of time trying to justify why I missed payments. In the end, I just paid back the missed payments, the interest, and had to wait for the bad debts to leave my credit report. Mostly, because there are no good reasons to miss payments on a loan.

I hate to tell you, but you really can’t miss payments on a loan. If they tell you your underpayment won’t affect you, they mean that they won’t report you to a credit beureau right away as long as you keep making your payments and don’t miss any more. However, you would have to be retarded to think that they would just waive the money you missed paying them. Of course they will expect it back, and of course they will charge you late fees and / or interest until you do. If you really were just “slightly short” one month, the thing to do would be to pay that amount, and any interest or penalties as soon as you realize, before it spirals out of control. Read your bill, I’m sure it told you you needed to pay. Why did you have to call them, clearly it just confused you. I can only imagine that there is more to this story. Americandust’s spin on it is at least plausible, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was even more embarassing.

Loans are not like phone bills. You kind of have to take them seriously. You have to read the agreement, understand what you read, then sign it, then pay it. Otherwise they fuck you. They have to. Otherwise nobody would pay. I’m sorry to hear the Sally Mae works harder to get their money back than other companies. Most financial companies do get kind of nasty when you try to dick them around. Don’t. Sorry your lesson is so hard for you to learn. Suck it up, get a job, and get on with your life.

I’m not sure what everybody’s issue is here.

Why would anyone try to attack those seeking to reform a corrupt student loan industry? Oh . . . never mind. I forgot. There are hundreds of lazy losers employed by the bloated student loan industry. People who have to work for protected and bloated companies like Sallie Mae because they are too lazy, too stupid, and not good enough to work in the competitive market. Either that, or they are one of those corrupt bastards in the NASFAA.

Sallie Mae has three corporate jets so the CEO can jet off to golf with vote whores like Buck McKeon and John Boehner. It’s important that we protect a CEO who is building his own private 18 hole golf course. If Albi loses his golf course, maybe some of the losers at Sallie Mae will have to drop their dicks and actually get to work.

So pathetic. The truth, Senatorial investigations, and press exposure won’t be impeded by some lame asses in the student loan industry. Student loan workers and the NASFAA are so incredibly lazy, they are not good enough to work in the competitive private sector. Student loan workers are only good enough to work in a government subsidized industry ripe with corruption. How’s it feel being “not good enough?*

What about people who were happy to escape the violence at home and can not go back to ask for help in that “just outta college, got a piss poor paying job” blues. When we sing those blues. . .no one cares or listens.

We are in the hell we are in part because we were young and stupid. Never did we think “yeah we can screw the government out of the money” . . the amounts they were asking for to get back on track after my dh got laid off were more than we took home in a month both of us working. This caused two reactions. . one to not take them seriously. . .they were asking for many hundreds of dollars and they might as well have just asked us to poop diamonds. . .each was just as likely to happen. And then they also threatened us with everything they could think of and more. They were right we will never own a house.

So now we are in a position to start paying and the loan has inflated over 300% you made an arguement earlier that it is not interest. . .okay interest, lawyer fees, transfer fees. . .and this was through NYSHED and now in consolidation with DL both government programs. . .and they should not be in the market to make money. This is to help lower income students. . a federal program to help students. . not a money making venture. What if the head of Medicare suddenly decided to buy his own golf course?. . .The fact that CEO of these companies are living large should be enough to make everyone say. . .WTF!

Plus add in record profits for EXXON et al. . .

    WTF!!!

this country belongs to the people. we need to be together. . .why you hatin’ so much dust dude? Why can’t we all just get along?

Hmmm, I had about $35,500 in loans to Sallie Mae for undergraduate and graduate studies, which I began to repay in late 1998. Paid them off in full in early 2008. I am a very liberal person and fully understand that some people encounter hardships; however, Mr. Collinge’s story sounds more like that of a guy who makes bad decision after bad decision, and decides to place blame anywhere he can rather than take responsibility for what he has taken on. His story is one of a deadbeat who wants to blame others for his own ignorance. If you take out a loan, fully expect that there are consequences if you decide not to pay. I have no sympathy whatsoever for his situation.

It is amazing the protoplasm masquerading as a sentient creature that manages to achieve several college degrees.

Yet, one question. Student loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy. Has anyone researched if the additional fines and penalties that now add up to several times the original (or re-negotiated)principal and interest might be (I don’t know the exact composition of the total amount that’s owing. Just wondering)

This wouldn’t by any chance be a Republican blog would it? How many of you were born with a silver spoon hanging out of your mouth? How many of you actually took out student loans?

  28. Barack Obama said

Reponsibility to pay one’s debts should not be a Republican concept only. Even Democracts, who fund by picking certain people’s pockets to fund their constituents, might understand this.

Paying one’s debts, acting reasonably and responsibly in the face of having debts–yes, I can see why this concept would be alien to many in our liberal generation.

Alan, you are such a pathetic waste of talent that it is a damn good thing that your wages will be garnished…better the money go to those you’ve wronged than be wasted on you. I mean, you quit a job without having another one secured and then moved off to an Alaskan island for $5/hr? If they HAD given you a hardship deferral for that, it would have been an injustice. Thank you for telling your story of woe. I needed a good laugh. I hope someone checks up on you when you are old, living on social security (since you can’t seem to hold a job or save any money even when you aren’t paying your bills). And, since Sallie Mae can garnish your social security payments, you’ll be living in a cardboard box eating Alpo. That will be hilarious, and you will have no one to blame but yourself.
Weavensix, many people work their way through school or save up for it (or, more often, a combination of the two).
The sad thing is that there are many people out there who have been legitimately wronged by Sallie Mae. Alan, by presenting himself as their surrogate, does them an injustice, as he is not really one of them. He is a spoiled, whiny baby who wants other people to pay his bills.

  30. TC said

Wow, no wonder America is in such a horrible mess… So sad to hear people being so vile about someone else’s problems. Yes believe it or not some people do have misfortune, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE makes bad choices, it’s whether you get away with them through either luck or cunning that makes the difference. It seems you cannot bear to hear that some people fail, and change has never come about without at least that one person who is willing to shout. I’m glad you are all so perfect with your finances, but get over the fact that the ‘American dream’ has created a tidal wave of misery and, as you so eloquently call them, ‘losers’ with no where to live and no one to fall back on.
For every rich fat cat there are hundreds upon hundreds of minimum-wage citizens working hard to pay for their luxuries, this is a sad fact of the world, and greed and a total lack of empathy will be our ultimate downfall.
The world economy is in such a sorry state because of this insidious greed, the banks believed they could keep reaping away forever, and I am sorry, but THAT is the stupidest and worst decision ever.

First of all, if we want to question anyone’s intelligence level, let’s begin with yours:

Here’s just a few examples of your idiocy, per the post you submitted.

*thought it “was ran” by the government….it’s “was run” (past tense) by the government

*you spelled didn’t (as in did not) as didnt’ (nice use of punctuation dumshit)

    *being “charge” a late fee …..it’s “charged”….what are you…Asian….do call a Cadillac
    a “Catarac”, too?

*He never “bother” reading…….it’s bothered (again….past tense, stupid)

*defence contracter business???? What a fucking idiot, you are…never had elementary level
spelling?…..how about defense contractor as it is properly spelled.

*sticking it to the “loaner”???? you mean lender (what…do you wear a fucking helmet and
    corrective shoes, too?

*fullfillment????? Maybe you should invest in some good spell checking software you mouth
    breather!

*exectutives??? (it’s EXECUTIVES) FUCK, HOW STUPID ARE YOU?

*THEIF??????? You are the only THIEF here, sir. You have oficially stolen the proper use of the
English language, or as you would probably spell it … langwidge. Ever hear of “I” before “E”
except after “C”….you should have learned that in first grade, but it now seems clear that
Jethro Bodine must have been your teacher when you lived in Bugtussle

*HEY LOOK EVERYONE……..NOW WE REALLY DO HAVE A NEW IDIOT TO LAUGH AT……AND AS IT TURNS OUT, HE’S THE (drumroll please)…….VILLAGE IDIOT….and his name is americandust…and I guess assholes like this think it’s ok for American taxpayers to bail out multi-billion dollar corporations and CEOs’ that take 400,000 vacations for themselves and their colleagues on the backs of the middle class. Sure, let these same corporations hide under the vail of bankruptcy, and jump out with their golden parachutes and offshore bank accounts, but you are so right, you pompous self-righteous dick head……fuck those of us that weren’t born with a silver spoon up our ass and are so stupid to pursue an education. Maybe we should just sit at home, collect welfare and live off the government, rather than stap ourselves to student loan debt that can’t be bankrupted like every other loan in existence…..yeah, your right, we should have to carry this debt to our graves. Chew on this while you are searching your thesaurus to figure out what half of these words even mean, or much less, as your brilliant post demonstrates…..how to spell them. Have a nice day.

Seriously, doesn’t Alan just sound like the biggest idiot in the world? Bad choice after bad choice then he wants the government to do something about his choices. You can just tell his little Communist-loving soul wants the government to run his life because he obviously can’t do a decent job of it.

Boy, I hope this blockhead comes back to try and defend himself. What an idiotic dope.

There’s nothing more Communist than bailing out wall street. The irony is, the Russians are the only major non-zionist country that are really free from the global financial crisis. They didn’t buy into the international banking scam. Of course, the student loan industry is just an offshoot of that.

The people who whine about personal responsibility like the jackass who runs this blog are inevitably the ones who have had everything handed to them on a silver platter. They’re the ones who are too simple to understand that the world is not black and white, right vs wrong. They believe everything they’ve been taught by the corporate media and never developed a critical sense with which to evaluate the propaganda. The guy who runs the student loan site is clearly not trying to get something for nothing. He just think that people should be treated fairly, which unfortunately, they are often not. While some people want a more civilized society, others like the dim witted blog owner and barely literate commenters, want to maintain a system where the few dominate the rest. Whine all you want about Communism – you don’t know what you’re talking about. Why don’t you try making the world a better place for once rather than crying when people speak up about injustices. If it wasn’t for people like Collinge, the world would be a lot crappier than it is. You don’t deserve it, but you get the benefits anyway. Assholes.

  38. Everyone on here (including myself) just quickly makes posts and shoots from the hip, so there will be mistakes… like the ones you made in your post (dumshit?).

And all the student loan justice idiots will come out from their mamma’s basement and scream that anyone who thinks people should actually repay thier debts must be “born with a silver spoon in their mouth.” This is their response to anything. In their minds, if you have anything you must have had it handed to you… either by your parents or the government. This is why they vote Democratic, to make sure the government gives them what they cannot achieve on their own merit. But they know they are worthless, so they have to take down those that earned anything by saying they were given it by their parents or luck or whatever.

Go read your Howard Zinn books again and cry yourself to sleep saying “it’ll be okay, Obama’s going to save me.”

Nothing “Liberal” about restoring free market principles to student loans and the cost of a college education. But if you want to be a ranting, name calling, ignorant, freak show further marginalizing the Conservative right, you’re doing a great job!

Fact is, the pursuit of the American Dream through education is a fundamental cultural American value and right. Banks and institutions of higher education capitalize on that. Removal of consumer bankruptcy protections made it even more profitable to do so, and so it’s not surprising that they’ve managed to find a way to “pig out” on it. This results in a lack of competition and actually, a MORE socialist educational loan situation as those who owe money become indentured servants. So, bring back the free market as it applies to institutions, lenders and consumers.

If you’re looking for people to point fingers and be pissed off at for being able to skirt their debt obligations, go after the gamblers and shoppers who rack up millions of dollars in debt and then write it off in bankruptcy only to DO IT AGAIN. Then you can rant at liberals who refer to them as “sick” people who need another chance. Educational loans and bankruptcy protections don’t fall into that category. Like the Libertarian Greenspan said “There’s a flaw in the system.” (FYI, a Libertarian is not a liberal, in case you need to look that up.)

nice try, jerkoff. typical oversimplification of everything you don’t like to hear. nobody ever said people shouldn’t have to pay back their student loans. they only said you shouldn’t have to give up your healthcare and eat ramen noodles for 20 years while sallie mae screws with you. student loans and education are supposed to help people get ahead in life. when they don’t, but only put you into servitude, there’s something wrong with the system. are you so dense that you can’t see that? or are you just so ideologically blinded that you cannot bear to agree with anything that you perceive as liberal? you’re probably one of the morons that are at mccain rallys calling Obama a traitor and a Muslim. get ready to cry yourself to sleep when Obama wins.

I’ve been reviewing this site for a few months now… It’s amazing anyone who has posted on this blog ever spent a day in a university. And shame on you Mr.Walsh, a librarian!
From what I see in this student loan issue is a bizarre mix of planted scare tactics by phoney “student borrowers” (ie. “Sallie Mae put us in jail!!”) and those who assume every complaint about student lenders is about paying back student loans. So far it’s one step up from a frat farting party.
Mr Walsh, I might send you a bill for – oh, perhaps $1,000. for
the research time I spent on the issues I need to correct you on.
Why? – Beacuse according to what you’ve written here, you advocate paying whatever shows up in your mailbox with “INVOICE”
    printed on top.
This Sallie Mae issue reminds me of the protest marches protesting a particular war or military action but inevitably there’s this long line of kooky follow-alongs including those who believe they’ve been abducted & probed by aliens – from another planet.
Pause on the farts Mr Walsh & let me enlighten you –
somehow I get the feeling you don’t give a rat’s hiney about the issue, you’re having too much fun “blogging” (as a kid you stuck your tongue out at adults didn’t you?). Anyway, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt but might have to send you that bill if my initial assesment of you bears out. I do NOT owe Sallie Mae. I DO pay my student loans. Yes, the bill is nearly as much as my mortgage, you ARE accurate when you say it adds up the longer you take to pay them off. I pay a pretty small mortgage; I got a great education & it wasn’t for free; few things of value are.
I walked into a University, and the US gov started writing the checks. I appreciate that. I chose a profession I love. Now it’s time I pay back that opportunity. I did find that there are ways to lower the bill: work in a low income area for a short time. Return small stipends you can do without; I gave back the last nonstafford of the last semester. Notice, that I have no complaints about my loan. I read the fine print & can live with it. If I become disabled, the loans will cancel. If I die they will cancel. I don’t intend to do either. However, that’s the loan agreement that was sold to me & all parties signed. I pay a good chunk of taxes as a professional, so I consider I paid for that backing twice over. Now, I DO have a dispute with Sallie Mae. They are a scam business that forges or steals ( I’m not sure which) student loans – then bills – and bills – and bills. I’ve sent all the paperwork – all the documentation that adds up like 1 + 1 = 2. Clearly reflecting that I don’t owe them – They have yet to send me a complete cojent reply & when I attempted to have a conference call with a SM employee, they hung up.. Crooks – plain & simple. Honest mistake??? HAH! Scumbags getting government guarantee money.. To the naive, yes there are big, bad companies that commit fraud in broad day light. Usually, laws deter crime but there are no laws regulating student loan lenders. This is why there’s a “massage school” on every corner & the lenders don’t care whether they lend to an accredited institution or not. SM will demand money from me even though they know – they have all the documents (by FEDEX to boot)that I never had a loan with them WHY? – BECAUSE THEY CAN. These are the true issues regarding the student loan industry. Every other lender has rules to abide by. We ALL have rules. Without rules we have lawlessness. The student lenders are lawless. Folks like me get pissed when someone else cheats or violates my rights. I cannot put in any simpler terms, Mr Walsh. The issue is that student lenders need regulatory control within the consumer credit laws. Hard to understand that you would have a problem with laws – unless you’re getting paid to 😉

Mr Walsh, seems to me you’re just another kook at the end of the protest march.

  42. I don’t really understand how anyone can read the story of Alan Collinge and find him to be anything but a pathetic deadbeat. The guy borrowed money to get not 1, not 2, but 3 degrees and then did absolutely nothing with the education he was so lucky to have received. To top it off, he ran from his obligations and then tried to change the rules. It makes me sick. I have always felt for the people who go into debt and then have some horrible catastrophic illness that makes it impossible to pay back their loans, but this guy just turned his back and walked away.

I would love to hear a decent explanation for this. If Alan or any of you can possibly explain to me how you are able to justify his actions, please tell me. If you are just going to visit my site to threaten me, call me names, or try to convince the world that I work for Sallie Mae, please spare yourself the trouble and don’t bother. If you are going to stop over to my site and talk about CEO’s salaries and bonus structure, no need because it has already been played out and I don’t care. I am asking for one thing and one thing only, and that is an explanation of how anyone can think that what Alan Collinge did is somehow noble or deserves to be rewarded.

Thanks to American Dust for keeping Alan’s real story alive and well. I may disagree with your overall politics, but I appreciate your view that we are all responsible for the choices we make.

As for undergrad, I’ve now paid back the money I borrowed (mostly personal loans, not all student-loans) and as soon as I got a job I stayed at home one year to save up money to pay back my debts. I’ve never driven a car

In other words, you got the money directly from MOMMY AND DADDY while THEY supported you. LMAO.

You’re just a kid. A stupid kid that can’t write, but a kid nevertheless. I guess we should give you a little slack for this. Try being responsible for yourself, TRULY ON YOUR OWN, in a situation where no one will help you. Not everyone has a family and a support network to bail them out. Of course lenders and bankers do.

This is why they vote Democratic, to make sure the government gives them what they cannot achieve on their own merit.

You talk about merit as if you have any. You don’t. Stop deluding yourself. Please. I sincerely doubt you produce or create anything of any merit whatsoever. BTW, what on earth does this have to do with voting Democratic you fucking moron? Get your head out of your ass – there is no two party system in America, there is only ONE. They both serve their corporate masters – and you’re just their propaganda spewing shill. Were you dropped a thousand times on your head when you were living at home or did they RFID your brain? I’m just trying to explain the retardation here, no offense to the part of you that is still not a remote controlled douchbag.

Go read your Howard Zinn books again and cry yourself to sleep saying “it’ll be okay, Obama’s going to save me.”

One great thing about Obama winning is that you’ll be squirming in your urine, and crying yourself to sleep [at your parents again], hoping for the day another Republican puppet can mentally jerk you off.

Ah, those 8 years were great memories, huh? All those religiously sinful orgasms…

Hey, maybe you’ll wake up one day and see through all your BS. Trouble is, people like you were created and programmed in some laboratory or genetic factory. All this time you probably thought you were a real person too…

If you had any intelligence you’d examine your brain and turn it off. It really doesn’t work. If you had any dignity you’d stop blogging altogether and keep your retarded-ass thoughts and opinions to yourself.

Everyone on here (including myself) just quickly makes posts and shoots from the hip, so there will be mistakes…

p.s. only fags and queers say “shoots from the hip”. If you’re dirt diver just admit it. I don’t personally partake in that lifestyle or judge it, but if assholes are your thing, enjoy your puckered asshole – just don’t try and get me involved in it, m’kay? I’m not interested in having your sperm shot into my face while you cackle like a demented schoolgirl. I just mention this because a lot of young male Republicans are closet homos. At the very least, they have a lot of trouble with women. It’s clear you haven’t been laid in a VERY LONG TIME, or ever. I guess chicks don’t dig the “Right-Wing Rage” as much as they use to when they were tied to the oven.

Jesus Christ, don’t you have anything better to do? You’re nothing more than a bum on the internet. I like how you just came here to spam your site.

I imagine there’s a great many things you don’t understand actually. According to Alan’s story, he did try to deal with his debts. It would seem to me his main point is that his debts have inflated beyond a level that he can actually pay them off. Duh.

It’s really great waste of tax payer dollars that THESE LOANS ARE EVEN GUARANTEED BY THE GOVERNMENT. The fact that the government is involved in education at all is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE TO ME. The states should be handling education matters, and the free market should be handling student loans. No one should be loaned money that they can’t reasonably pay back. Banks should take on the risks, not the government. Ideally, Alan shouldn’t have been loaned so much in the first place. It would’ve been better if the government just paid for his education, than have these rotten profit mongering collection agencies collect massive profits from tax payers everywhere! The real deadbeats are these scum that profit from defaults at the tax payers expense.

If Alan makes you sick, you’re an idiot. Get smart and do some research. I’m extremely sick of stupid Americans believing the crap they’ve been fed from the corporate media. You make me sick, as you don’t bother to understand what’s really going on. All you do is chase shadows and attack symptoms of the underlying problem.

I had been leaning toward McCain but after reading threads like these, now I am going to the polls tomorrow to vote for Obama and just hope he does something. I forgot one crucial thing: my 16-year-old student loans that have ruined my life. The jobs I was able to get did not cover student loans on top of everything else. So you do have to go back to your parents who taught you nothing about financial management and live in humiliation for the rest of your life with no family of your own, no vacation, no breather whatsoever. I HAVE worked hard and I HAVE done the best I know how to do , and it is NOT fair that I have worked hard to pay $30,000 toward my student loans I acquired back in 1992, and the $45,000 balance is now $60,000. It’s as if I paid NOTHING. That interest is CRIMINAL. Student loan companies profit more if you default so why not push you to the edge? No one is looking out to protect borrowers from abuse.

I am sick of many Republicans assuming that people with little or no money sit on their butts all day doing nothing, and lenders are all angels. And it is not fair that a kid can go to Vegas and run up 50,000 in credit card debt while someone who tried to do something with their life as a kid has no way out, no second chance, nothing to live for.

And not all people who live with their parents bum off them. They earn their keep, they help take care of them rather than stick them in a nursing home. I ought to have a medical degree after years managing my dad’s medication, lifting him up and down, raising him off the toilet all day long, listening to him scream all day, before he passed away last year – a long agonizing death. STOP JUDGING NOW!

suicidal, I feel your pain. Judging doesn’t help the matter. The People who think “…deadbeats who wants to blame others for his own ignorance…” Don’t understand that most of the people in this situation know:

“…collecting funds is important for the government and taxpayers, but there comes a point of no return where the ceaseless efforts to collect make no sense, monetarily or otherwise. Even borrowers who are able to make affordable payments often end up defaulting because of an overly complicated system and lack of effective communication between collectors and borrowers. There is some relief available for borrowers, but this relief is generally insufficient… The widespread use of private collection agencies to pursue student loan defaulters, combined with significant expansions in the government’s arsenal of collection tools, has led to abuses in student loan collection. There are also documented problems with training and oversight of third party private collectors. The use of private collectors adds substantial costs to the collection process and contributes to problems with both the amount of fees charged and when fees are imposed…”

If you were paying off 2 credit cards, each with say $6,000, and had paid a private collection agency $3,000+. Only to be told that you still owed $14,000, you would be pissed. With credit cards this is illegal, but not with student loans.

I now have a decent job, but, I did not immediately get a good-paying job after graduating. It took a few years. The dream we have all been sold is not entirely true. You can get multiple degrees with good grades from good schools and still have trouble obtaining good-paying jobs. Competition is tough. Job hunting is like American Idol. You can reach the top of every interview process you go through at every company for which you interview and still not get the job if there is only one job available at a particular company. If you find yourself in this situation, your bills will continue to grow and you will suffer.

I believe there should be some limit of what student loans company can do and how much your debt can balloon. The current environment allows serious usury.

Are those that lost everything via a sound institutin via Madoff “losers”? Is it fair to label those asking for justice or accountability in that situation a “whiner”? Did the SEC do it’s job? The Department of Education?

The reality is, we all make seemingly good choices that turn out to be bad choices. The fact is, there are corrupt organizations. Alan is not asking for a free pass, nor anyone else with a student loan. That is very clear on his website. Very few people come out of college with immediate employment, and very few go through life without a layoff or some other unfortunate event. The question is – Is it fair and just to double and/or triple the original loan amount because of a few partial or deferred payments? It happens. Most people I know in this situation have paid back the original loan amount + interest. Yet, they still owe tens to hundreds of thousand dollars to a corrupt lending institution. Do those that oppose Alan deny corrupt and predatory lending practices? Really? I ask the opponents of Alan to take pause, that’s all. The money that’s being extorted from thousands of people with bad student loans, could easily be used to stimulate the economy and viable instutions. I applaud Alan for his efforts in the name of justice – and I pray enough people will step up and take a stand against tyranny. God Bless.

After receiving student loans, and having worked in the industry, it still amazes me that uninformed people with big mouths can have opinions on things they know nothing about. For anyone that actually reads the Student Loan Scam book, and would research the Depart of Education/student loans, they would see the biggest and most glaring issue at hand. That is student loans are the only type of loans in the U.S. that have no consumer protection and that garnishment can take place on part, or all, of one’s wages and with no court order or documents. Why don’t you research the regulations that Bush signed in the first years of his eight years? Why don’t you look at the economy, medical expense problems, etc. of today and understand that things happen to individuals even though they have every reason to repay their education loans? I happened upon this post on American Dust and once again found crap information. Don’t trash the informer when you are dumb.

  52. American Dust said

Hey Mary Jane, how about you look into the laws and see that there was no “consumer protection” for student loans long before Bush became President. If, by “consumer protection” you mean the ability to dead-beat it and not pay those loans back.

Also, you should probably pick an internet name that doesn’t have a pot reference. Would-be employers are pretty techno savy and will find that and not hire you, so you will never have a chance to pay back your debts as Adam Smith, Jesus Christ, and Thomas Jefferson would want you to do. Surely you like one of those three so you should probably pay back your debts. OR just don’t do it like Alan and pretend you’ve been victimized by the mean ol’ company that let you go to college on their dime.

Maybe if you had done the research in the first place you’d not be so bitter about it now.

Oh and PS, my wife and I just got that wonderful feeling of paying off another student loan! Only one more to pay back and we’re even with the fine folks who helped pay for our college at a time we couldn’t afford it!

I am so happy for you Dust, but I even had a member of the US State Department here in Ho Chi Minh City indirectly admit that Fanny Mae, Sallie Mae, actually all the Maes, were corrupt scams….again that is coming from an employee of the United States State Department….what about the single income people coming from lower classes, who these loans are targeted at, that believe the hype and BS that an education will help them get their slice of the “American Dream,” and quickly find themselves trying to survive single, and paying these loans off sometimes as soon as the start of classes, in a dual income economy….lied to by the schools about college transfer credit, and job placement assistance that wasn’t there? Or the people that went to schools like Washington University, the top university in St Louis, Missouri if not the Mid West United States, and ended up with the highly prized job of crew member at “Jack n the Box” due to lies about job placement help? For these people the road to the “American Dream” only leads to the “American Nightmare” created by corrupt politicians and greedy corporate CEOs….Or maybe you could spout your inane pontification of this topic to a family who’s child committed suicide over student loans?….

Congratulations American Dust on paying off another Student Loan! I am continuing to pay mine every month, even in a bad economy, and am one class away from getting my Graduate Degree. It was worth the time and the loans.

I completely disagree with American Dusts’ Politics, but absolutely agree with him that deadbeats like Alan are a net-negative for this country. I respect AD’s opinions and have always been willing to hear his side of the story. Thanks for continuing to tell the truth about studentloanjustice.org and that loser deadbeat Alan Collinge. Keep up the good work.

    • Thanks for coming by again. It’s good to know you’re still around the ‘net. I’m actually trying to move away from politics on this blog, but I keep getting pissed at this spending/stimulus bill so I wind up venting on here. I laugh at you. I make a whooping 40 grand a year. My wife makes less then that. And yet, we’re paying off the last of her student loans while paying off the medical bills we got when we had a kid a few years ago. And guess what, we’re even able to keep up with our mortgauge and pay off our cars. We play by the rules and the system works for us BECAUSE WE WORK.

Nanette, Jose, you two take the cake. You did write it, you didn’t write it, you demand things for yourselves yet attack others who do. It is the wanton greed of people like you that weighs this country down.
    Jose, you have an excuse.
Nanette, you are a manipulative, greedy deadbeat who has never been able to hold a job. The simple reason for this is that you are too arrogant to do what you are asked, always assuming you are smarter than those for whom you work. Then, when you move on to the next employer, rather than being contrite, you are even more arrogant, as if the they owe you because the last job didn’t work out. You have gone through your entire life like this, somehow expecting a different result. Then, brilliant mind that you are, you thought you would better yourself by getting a BA in philosophy – yes, philosophy – and going deeply in debt doing it. All the while you carried your feelings of entitlement, demanding a work study job. Those go to students with real needs, not students whose needs are of their own making. Rather than admit this, you resorted to racism and xenophobia, a typical tactic used by losers to avoid having to admit to being a failure. Over that time, you, Nanette Ellen Rayman (as you were then known), ran up debt she could never pay back, and filed bankruptcy. You were able to stiff many of your creditors, despite having never made a good-faith effort to get a job and pay (that would have meant swallowing your precious pride). Your rage with regard to student loans stems from the fact that those debts are not so easily escaped. So, while other students celebrated graduation with their families, often getting nice gifts such as trips to Europe and cars, you got turned out of your apartment and dumped on the street. It never dawned on you that your fate was due to your own actions which alienated your family just as you had alienated your employers. Instead, you felt entitled, so you began leaching off the government, friends (the one who helped you in your pathetic, half-hearted attempt to make payments on your student loans), and then off a disabled man who, when you saw him, brought dollar signs to your eyes. The hard, grating poverty that has swallowed your life is earned and just. The same character flaws -your unflinching arrogance coupled with a total failure to take responsibility for your own mistakes – that lead you to lash out and blame other people for your current problems are the same flaws that got you there in the first place. It is sad to see an important debate, the debate over the justness of student loan practices, get muddied up in the drivel coming from a bitter, freeloading malcontent like you.

You are in love with me or why have you investigated my life? The part you can’t get right is the part you can’t know. You have no idea whether I looked for work or not. And you say I didn’t look for work, then you turn around and say I didn’t act correctly with my employers. Well, get this, you scumbag:

NYU told me I was too attractive to be a secretary.
Wine Spectator Magazine – the accountant wanted me to work full time after being a temp, but the politically correct VP wanted someone less qualified.

United Hospital Fund – Sharon Salit stole my work and told the boss I didn’t do it.

Go f yourself – you can harass and write about me until you die and so what? so f’ing what – who are you anyway but a cult member working for Sallie Mae.

Tell me Jacob, what mistakes have I made? TELL ME, you piece of garbage.

Again, if you weren’t an obsessive stalking freak, you wouldn’t know I filed for bankruptcy (like thousands of other Americans), you wouldn’t know much. And in the end, you know nothing.

I also know that you use my email account to email me and write these and other posts – identity theft much? Who is the real loser? I never did a damn thing to you for you to have such vitriol against me. And yes, sometimes I was smarter than my boss, but I never said so, so piss off =Sick puppy.

  68. Nanette Rayman Rivera said

in addition, Harding-Walsh, no one demands a work study job. The financial aid package comes with it. And guess what: I had another work study job 25 years ago when I DID have another job – you are ignorant – the most dangeous type of stalker-

as far as my family – you are just like them – sociopath maggots – why don’t you go harass my mother – you know who she is – you investigated me, so I’m sure you know.

And thinking that the best qualified person for the job should get the job is NOT racism. America used to be a meritocracy. Keep using your hard earned dollars to conduct investigations on me – who cares – I will keep calling you out for the scum stalking little tiny man you are.

I have been able to pay my loans without any problems, but the Federal Direct Program has made that a lot easier.

I feel lucky that I didn’t have the Sally Mae nightmare, but I will say that I remember the dishonest advertising from the company. They would send out mail saying that there was a problem with my loans and I needed to contact them immediately to resolve it. I did a little research and I did contact them, to yell at them for dishonest advertising!

Well the law at the time was one lender which meant that Sallie MAE hostage holder could deny my request to have a better interest rate without reguard for any decency Sallie Mae is pure GREED. IT IS THE LAW I WAS TOLD and we will not release your loan. Well I will agree with Alan on this point SALLIE MAE is GREED filled. And frankly, the loan companies you ripped off have the right to harass you – your pathetic inability to get and hold a job has to do with what a rotten person you are. My favorite point was mentioned by someone earlier when they asked why a gambling debt is treated differently than a student debt. It seems that simple justice requires either the lenders of consumer and other debt should be allowed to be more preditory and sticky OR the lenders of student debt should be reined in with equal rules and protections (like loan shopping for just one example).

My thoughtful question, to you dear reader, is how much suffering is acceptable for the people who didn’t win the parent lottery, win the IQ lottery, or just have a deficit in the financial area of their intelligence department (since it is hard to be smart at everything!)? These are the people who struggle with debt. Right now it is MUCH better that they stuggle with any debt type besides student debt.

About me: Both my husband and I didn’t win out in nurture (parents) or nature (IQ). We took on our student loans (both of us the only ones from our families to go to college) without a clue of what we were getting into. So far, we are doing OK with our loans but it is very disconcerting to know that that could change so easily especially knowing that we have a whole lifetime of paying ahead of us due to paying the steep price of accepting income based repayment (and choosing low paying degrees). That’s a long time to hope that we won’t have to pay the terrible price of forebearance, or heaven forbid, default penalties, at some point.

Please don’t bother responding to me as I won’t be back . . . probably couldn’t find my way if I tried! Oh, and also I wanted to note that it was so much harder to concentrate on what writers were saying when they spiced their arguments with dirty words and phrases. I’d like to encourage writers to be more clear and focused in their communicating.

Does laughing at “idiots” help you ignore the reality of your own ignorance? A typical self-appointed armchair pundit, you are one who knows nothing about a situation but feels compelled to be an expert on it and to pass judgment on someone else anyway. It’s funny that you want to criticize Alan for being an idiot while you can’t even use verb tenses correctly yourself:
    “…he’s being charge”
“…he thought it was ran by the government” Was ran? Seriously?
I wouldn’t usually point it out. People make grammar errors all the time. But you want to publicly criticize someone else for being an idiot. That makes you fair game. I learned to use my verb tenses correctly in about second grade.
Maybe try walking in someone’s shoes before you judge him.
People like you love to ignore the fact that entrepreneurs fail every day after borrowing money to open businesses, trying to achieve the American dream. When these people fail, they can file for bankruptcy protection and move on. It’s not fun. It’s bad for their credit, but they eventually can move on. When a student fails at achieving the American dream after borrowing money for an education, his debt is permanent. He never gets a second chance. There is no bankruptcy protection. This is inequitable.
Some day you might need grace in a financial situation. Good luck with the Karma if you do. By the way, if you need help reading this post, I recommend http://www.m-w.com

I used to be a member of Mr. Collinge’s group. I do believe there are some issues with student loans and decided to join his group long ago. Although, many of the things he rails about could be prevented if one just took responsibility for ones life. The thing I find important is making sure the media reports and people understand how much debt people are incurring today to reach their educational goals.

I NEVER donated because frankly it is impossible to find a statement on the financials of the group and where the money is going. So, today I get back from pounding the pavement and doing my part for the economy to find this in my inbox.

I too have had some suspicions on why a man with Engineering Degrees is unable to find work. That is one of the most in demand people right now and that coupled with no transparency in where this PAC’s money is going means I left the group.
    —————————————————————–
Hi. We need your financial support. We will be gone and this organization will be done without it. I really can’t put it more plainly than that, folks. I’ve been busting my ass on this end, and I really don’t think asking the members to pitch in $5 -$10 is asking alot. I have spent everything I can spend on this effort…to the point where I am absolutely insolvent and without assets, and there is nothing left. So if you have not done anything for this issue, and have not donated anything, then buck the fuck up, or get the fuck off of this group. We don’t want you here if you have nothing to bring to the table.

    http://www.studentloanjustice.org/pac.htm

I’m sick of the deadweight. Clear?

To everyone else in this group who have taken real actions and made real accomplishments on this issue, or who have donated anything to the cause…thank you, and let’s keep going. Sorry for the bad language.

    ——————————–
Absolutely amazing, now I really, really want to know what he is doing with his PAC donor’s money.

Here you leave this smear of Collinge and SLJ on this asshole’s blog and then say ‘thank you and let’s keep going” – how are you helping? The student loan industry is completely out of control fueled by unbridled educational costs and predatory lending, a year after your rant. I didn’t like the email either but I got over it because student loan reform MUST happen. Thanks everybody

Im still trying to understand one thing about student loan debt wonder how does this logic work with Americans?
The law does not allow for bankruptcy and other basic consumer protections for student loans but the same law will allow a bankruptcy discharge for people who blew thousands of dollars on flat screens, trips to Cancun, gambling, at strip clubs and buying $400 jeans! The irony is unbearable here. Future historians will likely laugh at this. No wonder the rest of the world laughs at America.

You are really unnecessarily hostile and lacking in understanding. Lots of intelligent people get into bad situations with student debt. There is a debt culture in the US where education is concerned and fees are ridiculously high. Unless you are lucky enough to be independently wealthy, debt is very difficult to avoid when going into higher education. Supposedly we live in a meritocracy where everyone has a chance: this is the way young people from modest backgrounds and lower-income families try to gain access to education and a chance for a better future. Even if you work the entire time you are in education, fees are often way too high to cover on top of living costs.

As many people have commented here, there is a very strong cultural emphasis in this country on the American Dream which perpetuates an idea for young people that they are likely to do very well if they invest in their future. I’m not saying having this idea out there is necessarily a bad thing, but it does lead young people to expect that they have a good chance at success and to count on that when making their decisions.

The only thing Alan is really guilty of is not being aggressive enough in his cause….he is up against multi billion dollar businesses, and he is try to fight them with “kiddy gloves” on….thinking politicians care about him more than the corporation who’s lobbyist is giving, the said politician, huge amounts of money to support Mr Rich CEO….more later….

  105. Razors_edge242 said

To be honest if I had everything honestly and openly disclosed to me when I first entered my college, and not lied to by my financial aid advisor looking to help a business and not a school, I would never have signed anything….

  106. Razors_edge242 said

OK that didn’t work how I wanted….so try again….I am so happy for you Dust, but I even had a member of the US State Department here in Ho Chi Minh City indirectly admit that Fanny Mae, Sallie Mae, actually all the Maes, were corrupt scams….again that is coming from an employee of the United States State Department….what about the single income people coming from lower classes, who these loans are targeted at, that believe the hype and BS that an education will help them get their slice of the “American Dream,” and quickly find themselves trying to survive single, and paying these loans off sometimes as soon as the start of classes, in a dual income economy….lied to by the schools about college transfer credit, and job placement assistance that wasn’t there? Or the people that went to schools like Washington University, the top university in St Louis, Missouri if not the Mid West United States, and ended up with the highly prized job of crew member at “Jack n the Box” due to lies about job placement help? For these people the road to the “American Dream” only leads to the “American Nightmare” created by corrupt politicians and greedy corporate CEOs….Or maybe you could spout your inane pontification of this topic to a family who’s child committed suicide over student loans?….

Well although you see ALAN as an idiot, you have to agree with how this loan works. First the degree guarantees you employment yes? Secondly, an educated person is more apt to secure employment over a high school graduate right?? Third, your salary increases over a period of time because you have an education yes??? Look asshole, no guarantees with the exception that you will repay THIS loan with interest and that interest will continue no matter what your situation. And this loan has no end in sight if you have huge student debt. Look asshole, middle class people don’t have the means to go to college unless they lean on a lemding institution. This means debt but not from a personal loan, auto loan, HELOC, or other which ALL have an end but continuous repayment that in many cases will never go away. It’s designed that way idiot. The same way countries lean on us where we can hold them at bay for repayment and if they don’t, punish them with ways u n I never hear about. It’s the new AMERICAN way of doing business. Get $$$$$ anyway u can. Your a F———- idiot.
